Judith Martin Creative Fund
Judith Martin, co-founder and Artistic Director of The Paper Bag Players, and a major influence in the field of theater for children, died on Saturday July 28, 2012. She was 93 years old.
Judith Martin both shaped and embodied The Paper Bag Players approach to theater for children, by writing, dancing, choreographing, directing, and performing in 35 Paper Bag Players shows. Her truly memorable performances included Aunt Judy in “Cookies,” Acrobat in “Acrobat,” Mrs. Miller in “Plumber Plumber Fix My Leak,” and Cave Lady in “Bow Wow!”
In an interview with Judith when The Paper Bag Players archives became a part of the Billy Rose Theater Division of The New York Public Library (2008), she said, “At first we had no idea of forming a theater, but one thing led to another, quite naturally—to think it has been fifty years—and to think it will continue, how wonderful!”
How wonderful indeed!
We are instituting the “Judith Martin Creative Fund” to commemorate Judith’s accomplishments, the joy her theater gave to millions of children, and to fulfill her hope that her art will continue.
All contributions to the Fund will go directly to supporting the creative work of The Paper Bag Players, from research, to experimentation, to discovering new ways to communicate with children through theater. The Fund will also support the creation of all new shows by the current Paper Bag Players and The Paper Bag Players of the future.
